We’re heading into the lush heart of Forest Park for a route that perfectly captures Portland’s urban hiking magic.
This hike is part of our new Community Trailblazer series, where long-time members of our network share their favorite local trails. Ja’von has been a staple of our hiking community for four years, and she’s taking the lead to show us one of Forest Park’s gems. We’ll follow the shaded banks of Balch Creek, under a canopy of Douglas firs and Western hemlocks, eventually reaching the famous stone ruins of the Witch’s Castle.
The vibe is relaxed and communal. We’ll take time to admire the wildflowers (one of Ja’von’s favorite things!) and listen to the creek. The terrain is mostly wide, well-maintained dirt paths. There are some brief climbs, but the 300ft elevation gain is gentle enough for most skill levels. Please bring comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots, a water bottle, and your curiosity.
We will meet at the Lower Macleay Park Trailhead (at the very end of NW Upper Thurman St).
Parking: There is a small parking lot at the trailhead, but it fills up very quickly on weekends. We recommend arriving 15 minutes early to find street parking in the surrounding Willamette Heights neighborhood.
Transit: This trailhead is easily accessible via TriMet (Bus Line 15 drops you just a few blocks away).
